When I was younger, I dreamed of being a Renaissance man (well, woman). I wanted to wear many hats and be a “decuple” threat. Some would say it is a blessing that I have so many interests and hobbies to keep me occupied. My mom tells me all the time that when I am older I will appreciate being such a “well-rounded person.” The way I see it is that when you’re a little kid, you have all the time in the world to pursue painting and knitting and music and figure skating and acting and songwriting and photography and…the list goes on and on. However, once school and work begin to take over your life, you start to realize the painful reality that you cannot throw all your energy into fifty different so-called “passions.”
Also, let’s face it: you need to be a supernatural genius to be prodigiously amazing at fifty different things. Most of us can handle one or two. It’s sad, though, to sit down and start picking what interests you should realistically stick with. You need to make the decision of which activities still have room to grow and which ones you know you will never amount to much. For me, the hard part of narrowing down my hobbies was that as a little kid, I really thought I could do it all. I always thought I was [fill in the blank]. Those were the days when I was blindly confident and (also, blissfully ignorant). Nevertheless, without further or due, let me take you on a trip down memory lane to discover all the hidden “talents” (lol) of my childhood. Note: this is really all in good fun! I am extremely grateful for all these diverse opportunities. Here are 50 signs that you are a true New Yorker. Note: This is all in good fun! 1. You are always in a hurry. You just seem to walk 25mph faster than most people you know, unless they too are New Yorkers. 2. People who walk slowly really annoy you. 3. People (cough, tourists) who walk slowly because they are gazing at the skyscrapers really, really annoy you. 4. You can navigate the subway system without a map. Even a last minute rerouting will not throw you off your game. 5. You cannot stomach pizza in any other city in America because you just know it won’t be as good as NYC pizza. 6. You love anything free! You’ll stand on line for three hours for something free! 7. You cannot go to sleep without the sound of traffic outside of your window. 8. Your idea of a nature hike is a walk around Central Park. 9. You avoid Times Square at all costs because you know it is a tourist trap. If you absolutely must walk through Times Square, you know how to evade the crowds of people. With my time in NYC for the summer sadly coming to a close, I have come to realize how much of my amazing home I will miss while I’m away at college. That being said, before I head off back to school for my sophomore year at Williams, I still had time to sneak in a last-minute family lunch at Il Bambino in Astoria, Queens. Despite being short on time and in the midst of frantically packing for school, my family and I found a relaxing and tasty respite in this cozy neighborhood café. Il Bambino serves up a delectable menu of Italian panini sandwiches at an affordable price. This is the perfect place for a weekend brunch or weekday lunch. The restaurant is a quaint little eatery with a take-out counter up front where your meal’s ingredients are displayed and an array of dine-in seating in the back. There is even a small patio and “garden” that is shaded from the summer sun by a canopy of modern drapery. The café portion of the restaurant is kept simple with brown wooden chairs (hard as a rock) and tables. The walls are decked out with farm tools and engraved mirrors. This is by no means award-winning interior design, but it does radiant a homey, local feel. |
